| | Try before you buy... One of the huge draws, for me personally, about the DSLR cameras like my Digital Rebel is the fact that you control the lens that you use. I don't necessarily know what all those lens specifically do, but I do know the basics. One thing that I knew I wanted to do is taking macro photography. Macro photography is the production of images on film that are life-size or larger. For some really odd reason (my family is still trying to figure it out!) I really wanted to photograph bugs. I knew what lens I needed, but the price tag on it scared me, and I didn't want to buy something that I couldn't either use, or wouldn't know how to use. Reading different message boards I found out that companies actually rent out lenses! I did a search for the one local camera company that I have here in town and sure enough they too rent out lenses. The price was economical, you got it for as many days as you needed, and it was wonderful for me because they also had the Canon 100mm macro that I wanted and had been saving for over a year for. I rented the lens and played around with it over the weekend and loved it. It wasn't as hard to use, but definitely would require me learning more, but it was not so far out there that even a beginner like me couldn't accomplish mastering it (I'm still learning!). When I returned the lens at the rental end, I made the purchase of my 100mm Macro. (Now.. please let me add here that I had been saving for the lens for about 1 1/2 years!) If your local camera store doesn't have rentals, then try online. The one that I hear a lot about is BorrowLenses.com . They rent everything from lenses to camera bags (what a great idea on the bags). They carry both Canon and Nikon products and they even rent out the cameras, so if you're wanting to try before you purchase the DSLR, it's a great option. They do only ship within the United States, but it really is a wonderful way to try before you buy. Tip for today: When editing your photos for brightness/darkness use the Levels feature. It will give you more control on the overall look of the photo and produce a much better looking image than one using brightness/contrast adjustment. In the full version of Photoshop, you can find Levels under Image >> Adjustments >> Levels. In Photoshop Elements, it's over at Enhance >> Adjust Lighting >> Levels.
