Creating a Gingham Background Paper

1. Open a new project 12”x12” with 300 pixels per inch and a transparent background.
2. Using the paint bucket tool, fill the background with your chosen color. For my sample, I chose white.
3. Next, go to the layers palette, and click on new layer and name it stripes.
4. Click on the pencil tool, choose a square brush, and set the pixels to 50. (Don't forget to hold down the shift button to get a straight line!)
5. Using the color for your gingham (I’ve chosen red), draw lines at ¼” and ¾” across the entire length of the paper.
6. Go to the layers palette, and adjust the opacity of the stripes layer to 25%.
7. Click on LAYER in the toolbar and duplicate the stripes layer.
8. Click on IMAGE in the toolbar, then ROTATE, then LAYER 90% LEFT.
9. Finally, go to LAYER in the toolbar and click on MERGE VISIBLE.
10. If you want, you can add a fabric-like texture by clicking on FILTER in the toolbar, and then TEXTURE, then TEXTURIZER, then set texture to canvas.
