I am planning on going to the library as soon as I am done with the book I am reading now. Any good books I should look for ? I'm really not into romance or sci fi, but other than that, I lov to read. So tell me, what should I get ?

I loved the Staphanie Plum series written by Janet Evanovich!! They are lighthearted and witty and fun, with a bit of whodunnit it in them!

Anything Wallace Stegner
Cormac McCarthy's "All the Pretty Horses", "The Crossing" or "Cities of the Plain".
Tracy Chevalier's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" ("Falling Angels" was only okay). Patty Jane's House of Curl by Lorna Landvik(good trash).
Jane Robert Wood.
Ellen Gilchrist(you'll laugh yourself silly).
My guilty pleasure for a couple of years were Diana Gabaldon books (and thanks for starting this thread, I just found a new book in her Outlander series--I'll be going to the bookstore tomorrow, thank you very much!).
Jan Karon--another guilty pleasure--pure schmaltz.

Anything by Keith Ablow--unless you don't like graphic descriptions of murder scenes.

The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Life Expectancy Dean Koontz
The Dive From Clausen's Pier Ann Packer

Any of Kay Hooper's "thriller mysteries".

There's so many...that's it, I read too much, lol!

I also really like Nicholas Sparks and Ann Rice. There are a few out by Marcus Majors-they are more light hearted romance, but I love them. I ended up getting a new one by Dixe Cash--My heart may be broken but my hair still looks great. LOL--goofy title but it is really good. I will be writing these down and looking at them next time I go to the library !!

Have y'all read anything recently by Anne Rice? She wrot eone really horrible bok (couldn't get past page 30) and after that, I wasn't going to waste the money to buy her books. I was devoted to her Lasher series, and am hoping someone can tell me her recent stuff is as good as her "old" stuff.

I'll second the vote on the Stephanie Plum novels...they are a hoot.

My absolute FAVORITE book of all time is Susan's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson. WARNING...it is NOT a typical Patterson book. It IS a tearjerker, but WELL worth it.

Barbara, I know just the book you're referring to!! Took it back to the store for a refund before I got thru the first chapter. I don't know what happened to Anne Rice, and haven't looked at any of her newer stuff either. Ruined me for reading her.

Stephanie Plum books are great!! I highly recommend them!

If you're looking for horror with a twist, try Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series, both of Laurell K. Hamilton's series (Merry Gentry, Anita Blake), and Mary Janice Davidson's Betsy (?) series. Another good horror series is Kim Harris' Dead books.

If you want more of a mystery, try Patricia Cornwell's books.

Good thread, and it's wonderful to see so many of us readers here :D

If you were only to read one scifi book in your life read speed of dark by elizabeth moon. And if you would like a scifi reading list let me know. I have an 8' x 5' wall of hardbacks and 3 large cd shelves full of paperbacks.

I just can't get into Sparks :( Anyhooo... I love anything, but Nora Roberts has a huge variety of books and although they do get a bit samey after reading 40-odd of them they are still nice relaxing books. THen there's my two faves, Sherrilyn Kenyon (Dark-Hunter series, she also has some more historic fantasies under another name which I've not yet read) and Jim Butcher for his Dresden Files series :)

Someone mentioned my all time favorites... The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon. (Just can't get enough of those men in kilts!)

A great historical novel that also tops my list is The Bronze Hoseman by Paulina Simmons. It's about The Seige of Lennengrad in World War II. Historical and Tragic, but filled with a fabulous love story! (It's actually a trillogy now)

And for something a tad different... Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. Well...really anything by him.

I love the mysteries they call "cosys", not scary but kind of fun (minus the dead bodies). Laura Childs, Jasper Fforde is genius, Marianne MacDonald, John Dunning, Agatha Christie of course, and food mysteries, like Joanne Fluke and Diane Mott Davidson.
