Shutterbug Challenge #1 - Black and White

Black and White - take 3 black and white photos (or change colour ones to black and white in your photo software).

Try going for different types of photos. Those with high contrast work especially well.

OK, I'm not really diggin' this black/white stuff.... what do you suppose is wrong with me?! I guess nothing really "strikes" me -- maybe, for me, it just has to be an awesome shot -- doesn't it have to be in the photo?! I like peoples layouts when pics are b/w but just the shots themselves I'm having a problem with. Hmmm........... I don't know - don't listen to me, I'm just blabbing! lol Here are my shots I converted.......

I have just looked through and commented on the whole shutterbug gallery and I am very very impressed with the photos I have seen so far!

jaklouie - yours are great! Just play around with it a bit, try out different photos. I tend to go for high contrast ones as they tend to stand out a lot. Things with lots of textures or water work well too. Keep practicing till you feel comfortable with it.

Almost have mine done for this. I picked two of my son in the leaves and one of my daughter in the leaves. I used Virtual Photographer black and white difuse preset on them all.

How do y'all edit your B&W photos?

I'll tell you what I did to edit the B&W photos I submitted. I was unhappy with the lack of contrast in the photo, so after tweaking it the best I could with PSE2's Enhance-Quick Fix features, I kicked up the contrast a notch by doing the following steps. Here are the steps from the beginning.

1) Open the picture in PSE2. Make a duplicate copy. Image--Duplicate Image. NEVER work on the original. Close the original.
2) Working on the color picture, make all the changes you can through Enhance--Quick Fix, remembering to fix the color first, and the Focus last
3) Next remove the color from the picture. Enhance--Adjust Color--Remove Color.
4) Make a duplicate copy of the all ready fixed photo. Layer--New--Layer from Background.
5) On the New Layer, choose the area you want to be darker on the photo. (for me, it was the window frames) Use your Magic Wand, (in the tool palette) with Tolerance of about 20 and make sure anti-aliased is checked. All the other settings are not chosen. Now click on this color. Now you have all the same color chosen throughout your pic. If too much is chosen, you can erase by using the selection tool--you might have to use Select--Inverse to erase the portions you don't want darkened.
6) Now Edit-Copy; Edit-Paste. This will copy the selected areas to a new layer. I had to make two or three copies of this layer to make it stand out. Layer--Duplicate Layer.
7) Now repeat the process with the whitest whites. Again, you may have to erase some of the large white areas.
8) When the photo looks like you want it, merge the visible layers. You can discard the background. Click on the background, then right click and Delete Layer.
9) now Save As you would like and you are finished!
