I really want to know how to make something that looks like torn, holey, and frayed jeans/material/fabric. I can't find anything anywhere to help me, maybe some other PS genius can. Everything will make it look like paper, but nothing that is stringy. BTW, I'm using CS2.

Directions for V3 or V4 PSE, sorry--I haven't created any steps yet for doing this in CS2.

1) Use the Rectangular Marquee tool (M) to select out a vertical section of the page
2) Set your denim color in the color swatches and Select Edit>Fill Selection Click OK and do not deselect
3) In Styles and effects palette, use Fliters (left) and Textures (right)
4) Double Click “texturizer,” change the texture scaling and relief for your image and click OK
5) Ctrl+D to deselect
6) Rectangular Marquee (M) to select the edge of the colored “fiber” and pick up a little bit of the white background.
7) Ctrl+J
8) In Styles and Effect palette, choose Filters (left) and Stylize (right) doubleclick “wind”.
9) Put the cursor in the checkerboard and drag so you can see the border selection.
10: Choose (method) "Blast" and choose the direction that breaks up the border best. Click OK
11) In Styles and Effects palette, choose Filters (left) and distort (right) Click ZIG ZAG, drag in the checkerboard to see the border's edge.
12. Choose Style: Out from Center, and drag the ridges slider to about 25 or more
13. Use the moVe tool to drag the “torn edge” to the fiber’s edge if you need to
14. Merge and you should have torn frayed denim look that you can then begin to work with a bit. I would select all the white>inverse the selection, and jump just my frayed torn edged fabric up to a layer of its own, nuke the background, and finish with a grungy eraser or brush to make the tear look like I want it to.
Or better yet--scan a piece of torn denim and save yourself the agony!

Do you have these directions saved in a tutorial somewhere on the site? I'm not quite advanced enough of a user to even attempt this YET...but would like to make sure I (and others) can find this to refer to when I am ready to try it out.

Just an idea...if you haven't done it already!

Thanks

Sharon Kay

You could try copying and pasting those directions into a word document, then saving that to a tutorials folder on your own computer that you build up as you work along with PSE. I think that will work. No the tutorial is not posted here at gottapixel.

Sharon Kay,

Here's what I do when I want to print out just ONE post in a thread...

I click on the number to the VERY RIGHT of the thread title... in this case, it's the "#4"...

A new window will open up with JUST that post... (not the entire thread).

I click FILE -> PRINT on my browser (mine is Internet Explorer 6)... and then I have a hard copy.

If you want to save it on your computer, then I'd follow Priss's advice and copy/paste it to a Word document or a Notepad document. :)

Hope this helps! :)

Ted! Thank you so much!! I don't think I would have figured that out on my own. I was just thinking I needed to get a 3 ring binder to put all these tips and tutorials in until I learn them all...then I can pass the tips on to one of my friends whom I am sure will be following in my footsteps. ;-)

Hey were your ears burning last night? I was in my first chat here last night and your name came up...

that is a good idea...now to decide whether to print or leave in a tutorials folder...I like both ideas...I'm sure one way or another I would end up printing the instructions at some point...just one of those kinds that need it printed. lol

Thanks for the idea!

Yep, I have such a binder... and I find it quite useful. :) Not sure how to divide/organize it yet... but I'll learn! :)

My ears weren't burning... maybe they were talking about another Ted... the charming, INTELLIGENT one. ;D

Hey Ted, Thanks for the tip about how to copy just one entry from a thread. That saves me a lot of space and editing!

Hi Lisa,

You're very welcome! :) I stumbled upon that little feature myself! :) It's a time/paper/money-saver! :)

Glad to help! :)
