How to create a torn paper in PSCS and PSE ... this tut will work for both programs...
Open your 12x12 paper you will be using for your background.
Open or create the 12x12 paper that you want to tear. Using the move tool, move this on top of your background paper.
Select the lasso tool... on your options bar, next to the lasso tool, make sure you select the 4th icon from the left... "intersect with selection"
For this tut we will do a diagonal tear top left corner to bottom right corner ...
Using your mouse, (or wacom pen and tablet) begin at the top left corner and draw diagonally to the bottom right corner (making the edge look like a torn piece of paper would).. when you reach the bottom right corner move your curser outside the layer and circle around the top of the layer until you come to the top left corner and join the lasso to the starting point. This will give you an outlined area... hit the delete key and the top portion of this selection will disappear.
At this point you still have your running ants around your selection at the top... go to "select"-- "inverse" The running ants should now be at the bottom of your selection.
With your mouse (or wacom pen and tablet) start at the upper left corner again and draw as closely to the first slection as you can... creating a torn affect.. it does not have to match the outline of the first tear. Again, when you reach the bottom right corner.. do as before.. and circle around the top of the layer joing the points at the top. This will now give you a thin selection.
Hold down the control key and hit the J key. The selection will now be copied to your layers palette. This should be layer 2.
With layer 2 active.. go to "filter"--"noise"-- "add noise" A new window will appear... (If you don't see a preview of your layer in this window use your mouse and click on an area of layer 2. ) In this window you want to make sure "monochromatic is checked.. and then slide the amount bar until it appears grainy... usually between 10 and 14 %.. .but each paper is different so you will have to experiment. Click "OK"
Now go to "filter"--"blur"--"gaussian blur" and add a slight blur to the layer... about 1-2 pixel... again.. each paper is different so you just have to eyeball it.. you want it to appear blurry.
Next.. making sure you are still on layer 2 (torn layer) hold down the control key and hit the "L" key.. the "levels box" will appear. Here you will adjust the color of the tear by sliding the middle arrow to the left and the right arrow to the left until you achieve the amount of whiteness you want. When you are happy with your result... click OK
To add a texture to the tear... go to... "filter"--"texture"--"craquelure" Again, these settings are personal preference.. I set mine usually somewhere around -- spacing= 8- depth= 3 and brightness= 9. These will change depending on the different papers you use. Just play with them until you get a look you like. Click OK to accept.
With this layer still active.. select the eraser tool... draw along the edge of layer 2-- the torn paper-- to make the "torn" part more irregular.
Once all this is completed.. you want to merge layer 2 with layer 1. Make sure layer 2 is active... right click your mouse.. select "merge down." Add a soft shadow and you are done!
