Text on a Path?

Okay, so I know how to make a text on a path with say...a circle or square. But is there any way to do it with an abstract shape. Say I have a photo of my daughter and I've cropped just her out. And I want to form the text around a certain part of her. KWIM? Is there any way to do that?

use the Pen tool in freeform mode... this will create a path anywhere you draw.

I know how to do it, but has anyone figured out how to get the text to not deform so much. I'm usiing PSPX. I've played around with the kerning and the leading values, but I just can't get it to look good. Does anyone have any tips?
