TUT: KNOTTED BOW

I didn't have a tut for this knotted bow to follow so I just tied a bow here at home and tried to duplicate it using PSE. This Tut will also work in PSCS. For the most part, it is just using your warp tool found under.. Filters-Distort-Liquify. I did my bow in pieces and then moved them over to a seperate layer to assemble them.

1. I first opened a ribbon that I wanted to use. I cut a length of about 2 inches from that ribbon. I moved it to a new layer (sized 5"x 5" to give me some extra space.) Make sure the ribbon is postioned lengthwise.

2. With that layer highlighted I then went to Filters, Distort, Liquify. A new window opens with your ribbon tail. In that window there are additional tools on the left side. You will be using the warp tool.

3. Click on the warp tool to activate it and then a circle will appear over your layer. You may resize it larger or smaller (using the right and left brackets) depending on the ribbon width and how much of the area you want to move.

4. Begin clicking and dragging the top portion of the ribbon downward towards the center of the ribbon, small sections at a time. Repeat the same process with the bottom portion of the ribbon until you have shaped the
end that will be UNDER your knot. This will be the narrow end. Once you have the look you want, click OK and it will apply the affect.

5. I then duplicated this layer and flipped it horizontally. Then I moved the layers so that the narrow ends touched in the center and rotated them slightly.

6. Going back to the layer that has your ribbon you cut the tails from...cut another section. This section should be about 3/4". Move it to its own layer.. ( I put it on a 3"x3" layer) Go to "image-rotate-rotate layer 90 degrees to the left" and then go to Filter-Distort-Liquify.

7. You may find it helpful to have a knotted ribbon in front of you to kind of follow the shape of the knot.

8. Again you will use the warp tool to click and drag the ends of the ribbon. You may also nudge the ribbon's edges slightly to give it a more rounded appearance. Once you are happy with the shape of your knot, click OK. This will apply the affect to the knot.

9. Move your knot to the layer that has your ribbon tails and assemble your pieces. You will probably need to size the knot (using the transform tool) and turn the knot slightly to get the proper placement.

10. The knotted bow looks nice with just the one layer of knot but if you want an under knot... then you need to duplicate your original knot layer. Move the copy under the original, rotate and adust to fit.

11. You can add a small drop shadow to the top and under knots so they don't look flat. If you do this you will want to do the shadows on a seperate layer and erase any shadow in the transparent area.

12. Copy the under knot and add a small drop shadow to the copied layer, use your eraser tool to remove any shadow in the transparent area.

13. Copy the upper knot and add a small drop shadow to the copied layer, use your eraser tool to remove any shadow in the transparent area.

TO MAKE A TIED BOW:

For this tut you will follow the Knotted Bow Tut with just a few changes...

#1. I first opened a ribbon that I wanted to use. I cut a length of about 1.5 inches from that ribbon. I moved it to a new layer (sized 5"x5" to give me some extra space.) This will be your bow ends.. right and left.

Do step 2-3

#4. Click and drag your ribbon, small sections at a time, downward toward the center until you have shaped the end that will be UNDER your knot. This will be the narrow end. You will do the same thing on the outter edge of the bow EXCEPT instead of making this end narrow, you will want to use the warp tool to "nudge" the end inward. This will give you the appearance of a rounded edge that looks folded.. and not flat. IF you have a pre-made edge on your ribbon, you will want to begin with the upper edge and, using small stokes, drag the edge downward and into the center. This will help to create a corner with your pre-made edge and it will look more natural. (I hope this makes sense?) You will do the same thing at the lower edge.. dragging it upward and toward the center. *note... there is a tool called the revert tool.. It should be the 3rd tool from the bottom in PSE. It is an "undo" tool.. it comes in handy to undo steps one at a time instead of having to start all over by using the revert button... handy tool!) Once you have the look you want, click OK and it will apply the affect.

#5. I then duplicated this layer and flipped it horizontally. Then I moved the layers so that the narrow ends touched in the center.

Do steps 6-8

#9 Move your knot to the layer that has your ribbon ends and place your knot over the center of the ribbon ends. You may have to resize the knot (using the transform tool) slightly.

You may choose to do step 10 or skip it.

Save steps 11-13 for after the other ribbon parts are done and assembled.

#12 Return to your original ribbon and cut a piece that is 2 inches long. Move this piece to it's own layer. We will use this section to create the bow tails. Go to "Filter-Distort-Liquify" and again, using the warp tool click
and drag downward towards the center of the ribbon, small sections at a time, until you have shaped the end that will be UNDER your knot. This will be the narrow end. Once you have the look you want.. click OK and the affect will be applied.

#13 Move this layer so that the narrow end is under ONLY the center knot. If the end is not narrow enough you may go back into the liquify window and add a bit more warp to the end so it will fit nicely under the knot. Once you are happy with the fit of this tail... duplicate this layer.

#14 Mover the duplicated layer to the other side of your bow. You may flip this layer if you like or just leave it and rotate it so that it fits UNDER the bow end. Adjust it to your liking. You now should have two tails, one is under the center knot on one side -- and the other is under the bow end on the opposite side.

Do step 11-13 now. (if you want a shadow under your center knot)

15. Merge layers and save as a png file.
