threaded ribbon highlights

I'd like to know how you make the highlighted and shaded areas on ribbon that has been threaded through a buckle etc. to give it that raised ridge that shows that it is laying over the center part of the buckle.

I'm not sure what anyone else does, but creating a cutout (shadow) on the piece that is laying over the center part of the buckle gives the effect you desire.
