At the school year I was given an opportunity to teach an after school club or 1st and 2nd graders teaching basic photography. I wanted to share with everyone some of the things that I've learned as I know many of you have wondered how you can get your own children into the art of photography!

1st and 2nd graders are not to young!

It's been very interesting to see how these young children interact with the camera and the one thing I've learned is that they can handle a point and click camera, however, the key is moderation. I have learned that for this age range, especially when the child is with another child, 30-45 minutes is a good time frame to let them loose with the camera. More than that, they revert back to being 100% kid and forgetting the rules that you set up when you handed the camera over in the first place.

Set firm rules and go over them every time you give them a camera

For our club we have 4 rules.

As soon as you get the camera, put the strap around your neck. Each of the Easy Share Kodak's that I use for the club have a badge lanyard attached to it so that the child can have the camera around their neck. The lanyards are cheap and can be found at Walmart or any hobby store.
Always hold the camera with one hand. This helps to stop the camera from swaying back and forth while the child walks.
No running. When kids run, they are children and tend to forget about the camera.
HAVE FUN!

Whenever you hand over the camera, ask the child to recite the rules so that they are reminded what should and should not be done.

Teach them the basics of how to use the camera

Show them how to turn the camera on and off.
Show them how to check to make sure the camera is on Auto setting.
Show them how to press the button to take the photo.
Show them how to zoom in and out.
Show them how to review images that they have already taken.

I used to show the kids how to delete their images, however, due to a setting on the camera that turns off recording images to the card and shoot to internal memory, I stopped showing them how to delete. I explain to them that we can delete late on the computer.

Give them a goal

I have great luck with keeping the kids more focused if we make a game out of the photo. As we are walking I call out "Okay, now find something that is GREEN" and they search out things that are green to take pictures of. We have done this with shadows, reflections, colors, shapes and letters. It's a great way to incorporate things they are learning in school as well!

Have fun

Make taking pictures fun. It's not about rules of third or proper exposure. It is all about teaching your child to see the world in a different way. While you're out taking pictures have the kids lay under a tree and look up and take pictures. Show them that it's okay to look at things in a different angle than they normally would. Have them sit on the floor and see what they can see looking up.. a "dogs eye view" as I explain.

I've taught the entire school year so far, with 8 different kids each quarter, and we haven't broken a camera yet and I've had the extreme pleasure of meeting some wonderful children and seen some incredible photos and I've seen a new world through their eyes!

Sounds like fun. Maybe I should suggest that at our school.

I've already let my son used my P&S camera. It's usually when I need pics of him at school and I don't want to be that "mamarazzi" mom. He has taken some priceless shots which I am happy about. I've showed him how to take a pic, how to use the viewfinder and how to review them. I didn't show him the delete which is good!

Another thing is that he has his own kiddie camera which he uses if he wants to take pics. The pics aren't the best resolution but I've used them on scrap pages. He took it to preschool and day care before and I know have photos of his days there that I wouldn't have been able to get myself :)

You would be amazed how much little minds can grasp when you take the time to show them. I'm amazed at stuff my DD is learning just from her observing us. She already knows that if you have a pen in your hand, it means to write on paper. I think she figured that out from watching her brother doing homework :)

We got my 4 year old a VTECH camera for Christmas and she loves it. She walks around with it all day and zooms in and out. It doesn't have the best quality but she loves to look at the pictures she took. She never takes pictures of full people or things. A leaf on the plant, her sister's toes, a picture in the page of her book.

Thank you for the tips! Maybe I can use them to get my older boys interested in taking pictures.

That is a cool idea. My kids love to use the camera, and are pretty good at it if I say so myself. It would be fun to teach a little class about it.

Great ideas - I gave my 3 year old one of my old digital cameras and he loves it. He takes some pretty good shots too!

Awesome! My 11-year old is in Photo Club this year and they do "scavenger hunts" too. For instance, they had to find things to represent the letters of their name and photograph them. He got pretty creative. He has a little point & click of his own and loves taking pics. He WANTS to use my camera...unfortunately I just got a new Nikon D7000 and when I see him holding it I get twitchy. LOL

I really wanted to give my 11-year old my Fuji Finepix 5000 when I got my Nikon, unfortunately, it died! I'm still going to see if I can find out how much it would cost to repair. I really want him to love photography as much as I do!

Yeah, if my kids close to my Canon I get all twitchy :lol But they know that it's hands off.

How fun! My 5 yr old has loved taking pic for awhile now. I do let him take some with my DSLR, but always with the strap around his neck and usually they're of me or around the house - so I don't get tooo worried. I should give him my old P&S - only 1 MB but then I won't fill up too much space on my laptop or EHD. Great idea for a kids club!!

I used to hand my P&S camera to my little nieces when they were about 3 or so. It was funny to see the stuff that they shot. There was some pretty good pics. They loved it too.

Got some great ideas here. Thanks.

My cousin's 7 years old just got her first camera and her almost 6 year old is now begging too, but she'll have to wait until next year (First communion). Of course this results it a tantrum but after she calmed down, I let her take pictures with my camera. To her that was so awesome because that one was bigger than her sister's one. Hihi.
I also insisted : put the strap around your neck and no running ! Ok had to repeat it a few time but apart from that I was quite surprised how quickly they picked up stuff.
It does give a great different view on life ... that first afternoon a lot of "bottoms" and funny faces got snapped. LOL.

This is an awesome post. Thanks so much for sharing. This year I've had the pleasure of helping out the yearbook coordinator with our 5th grade yearbook club and will be taking over next year as coordinator. This has given me some great ideas on how to handle the 5th graders next year and what to teach them. Thanks again!
