So I thought this may be fun. We'll see if anyone else thinks so. So what you do is pick something that you remember from any time during your life. Can be a style of clothing, an item, or anything really. The next person sees if they remember it. I know we are all from different generations and some from different countries so I thought it might be fun to learn about different things that were popular. You might even add a story about something if you would like.
So I'll start
Do you remember when New Kids On The Block were popular?

Sagediva2

Humm Lori I don't think I remember those VCRs.
Jamie I remember those days.
Jo I don't have a clue what those are. Will have to look that one up :)
I remember when AOL was a big thing and you had to use your phone line to get online :) (Back then we didn't complain when the internet was taking longer than a few seconds to do anything)
grrfluudy
10-11-2011, 11:59 PM
Hehehe. I remember that. And when AOL first came out I couldn't even get to the World Wide Web with it. I could just play on aol. like send emails and do their boards. weird.
I remember when leg warmers were cool. The first time.
Sagediva2
10-12-2011, 12:02 AM
Not sure when the first time was but I remember them in the 80s. Especially in workout videos.
I remember when the phone in the house had to be attached to the wall and depending on the cord length you couldn't go far from the place it was attached.
grrfluudy
10-12-2011, 12:05 AM
Yes, that was when leg warmers were cool.
I TOTALLY remember that. So annoying!! You were at the mercy of wherever there was a phone plug in.
I used to watch Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. I loved that show. Did anyone watch that?
TerryF
10-12-2011, 07:15 AM

Oh, I remember Chatty Cathy AND Chatter Caspar the Friendly Ghost. My sisters got them when I got my Barbie....back in the day when girls ONLY got ONE Barbie! I also remember those 45 adapters. I'm guess a lot here not only don't remember them, but don't remember what a 45 is!
I remember milk in glass bottles, sometimes even delivered to your door....
lwentkie

10-12-2011, 08:48 AM
my grandparents had the coolest old sterio. It played records, and eight tracks, and also had a radio in it. I also remember having a fisher price record player of my own and my own records.
Sagediva2
10-12-2011, 01:42 PM
Jo I didn't know there was a show about the Hardy Boys and Nacy Drew shows. I have heard of the books but don't think I ever read them.
I definately remember record palyers. I believe my parents still have theirs. I also remember the children's record player. I don't think I ever had one though.
I remember when big curled bangs were all the rage. It was like a contest to see who could get them the biggest.

Wut Kristin!? New Kids on the Block aren't popular anymore?? haha I missed that memo...I just went to see them in concert in May :D
Jo, I still bust out my legwarmers too! ROFL
I was queen of BIG hair...circa 1980's! I bought stock in Aqua Net Hairspray too!
Anyone remember FotoMat's...those little huts outside of shopping malls where you could drive up and drop off your film to be developed? I have no idea what made me think of that!!!
grrfluudy
10-12-2011, 03:37 PM
I had a record player until I was probably 18 ish and then I listened to tapes mostly. I was a hold out on getting a CD player, although they existed when I was in high school, but just barely. They were soooo expensive only rich people had them at that time. 1985. But even when they got cheaper, I still didn't buy one for a long time...my tapes were good enough for me. LOL
Yes, I totally remember those, Cindy!! I don't think we ever used one though. LOL
I remember transistor radios. They were these little radios that had a dial on the side and a big speaker on the front and i think they took batteries, and they got AM channels because there was no FM yet. I had a blue one, my sisters each had red and yellow ones. They were awesome!! (reminds me of one of my favorite lines from the song AM Radio by Everclear which came out around 2000ish "I lay in bed with the radio on, I would listen to it all night long. Just to hear my favorite song. You had to wait, but you could hear it on the AM radio."

I remember them but I never had one...I did have a Boom Box though...hahaha!!!
What about walkmans...OMG I could never imagine running or working out in the gym toting around one of those!!! What the heck did we ever do before technology?? We were laughing the other night about the ginormous cell phones we used to carry around with us...and that wasn't really even that long ago :)
pepsibubbles
10-12-2011, 04:30 PM
I remember my mum and dad getting our first TV 1953 for the coronation of Queenie. That was a few years ago. ;)

10-12-2011, 04:46 PM
I remember having a VCR that wasn't so long ago, leg warmers first time round. Also remember 45's, LP's and even 78's Gramophone records, that's going back to the dark ages. Here's a link to remind you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramophone_record
Milk in glass bottles, still delivered to your door over here. My dad bought me a transistor radio, thought I was the bees knees walking around with one of them lol

LOL I remember my dads "brick"! I took my walkman everywhere! I even had the diskman.
Do you guys remember units! those crazy knit outfits that had skirts and leggins and long shirts that mix and match. (wait isn't there a similar trend today?!)
TerryF
10-12-2011, 06:46 PM
what a wonderful nostalgic thread ... I remember all the things from way back, but a few of the "newer" ones I must have missed.
Jamie, I don't remember units. I do remember bell bottom pants, peasant blouses, and love beads.
grrfluudy
10-12-2011, 07:21 PM
I do remember milk in glass bottles. They weren't delivered to our house though. I used to go with grandma to the "Drive through Dairy" And they would get you what you wanted. She always got one bottle of whole milk and one bottle of chocolate for her grandkids. :)
I TOTALLY remember units!! How funny. I had forgotten about them until you mentioned them, Jamie. I thought they were *kinda* interesting at the time, but expensive.
I had a tape walkman but not a discman. I had a data entry job in like 1999 and took my walkman to listen to music while I worked! LOL
Yes, always behind the times.
Remember in the early nineties when it seemed like everyone had a pager and people used to just page eachother like we text now? Yeah, I never had one...I was just on the too old side. but it was an interesting phenomenon.
Oh and what about scrunchies? They were actually invented in the early 80's but didn't really catch on until 1989 or so. Then in the early 90's they were everywhere. I used to wear one on my wrist because you never knew when you would have a "hair emergency" and would suddenly have to put your hair in a ponytail. LOL (and yeah, I still wear them sometimes.)
Sagediva2
10-12-2011, 08:29 PM
LOL Cindy. I hear they were back on tour with NSYNC people????
I don't remember milk in glass.
I had a walkman and a discman. I was young and had to have all the latest and greatest :)
Pagers were hung. DH and I talked about that just a little while ago. I never got into the pager thing. Guess I wasn't cool enough LOL.
Oh scrunchies were the best. I always had one around me wrist even if I had one in my hair.
I remember when the cell phone required you to use an antenna on your car and plugged into the cigarette lighter for power.

Terry I wasn't born when bell bottoms were big the first time but I had some when they were big when I was in high school.

I remember around '78 to the beginning of Jr. High like '83 it was SO cool to carry a comb in your pocket. They made the handle especially to look cool hanging out of your back pocket. If you liked a guy you would steal his comb and vise versa. anyone remember that?
Sagediva2
10-13-2011, 11:28 AM
No I think that had gone out of style by the time I got to school.
I remember Garbage Pail Kids cards. If only I still had my collection. I'm sure they would be worth a little something.

Don't remember the comb in the pocket thing...too old I guess. I had a walkman, but really didn't use it much, and the kids had discmen for swim meets...but it was sooo nice when iPods came along. I had a 'bag' phone for my first cell and had a plan that gave me 20 min/month! They were strictly for emergencies in those days! Never had a pager but dh did, for night calls. Around here, the only people with pagers were 'on call' for emergencies, or suspected drug dealers. SOOO nice when I got a REALL cell phone!

10-13-2011, 05:20 PM
Banana Clips!! I totally forgot about those! LOL
I remember on road trips we would play bingo with those cards with the little red slidy things as markers. Anyone else?
Sagediva2
10-13-2011, 07:57 PM
I forgot about banana clips as well. Loved them.
I don't think we ever planned Bingo with those cards in the car but I remember those type of cards.
Who remembers. He-man and Shera. (Spelling?)

10-14-2011, 02:01 AM
I remember garbage pail kids, I had quite a few.
I remember He-man and She-ra. I didn't watch them though.
Does anyone remember Pepsi Clear? Yeah, that was weird.
Sagediva2
10-14-2011, 08:48 AM
Jo that was a strange thing that Pepsi decided to try. No wonder it didn't last long.
I remember Cabbage Patch Dolls and had two very special ones. Actually they are in my parents attic still. I really need to get them to look and see if they are still playable for DD. Hope the bugs didn't get to them. BTW they are still around but pretty expensive especially if you want to mail in the birth certificate and all.

I can't believe you all don't remember the Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew on TV!! Shaun Cassidy was on it and so was Parker Stevenson (swoon) and Pamela Sue Martin!! I used to love that show! I remember almost everything else y'all have mentioned too. I passed my cabbage patch doll down to my daughter recently. I still remember the boy I was dating who gave it to me.
This will show my taste in music - Does anyone remember Adam & the Ants? (the singing group)
CindyB
10-14-2011, 01:09 PM
Oooh, don't remember Adam and the Ants too well...but do remember Adam Ant better in his solo career :)
Anyone remember rollerskating with metal wheels?
Sagediva2

Don't remember Adam and the Ants or roller skating with metal wheels. Guess I'm just too young :)
I remember slap bracelets.

10-14-2011, 01:40 PM
You guys are making me feel like a baby :(
I remember slap bracelets in elementary school. Probably the things I most remember in elementary school were those little keychain pets (Tamagotchis) when collecting Pokemon was really popular, and those Furbie dolls.

I was older when furby dolls were out. Anyone remember the original Little People toys?
Sagediva2
10-14-2011, 02:00 PM
I didn't have one of the Tamagotchis or Furbys but remember them both.
Lori, my mom still has an older Little People set. It was from when I was little so it is an 80s toy. DD loves playing with it when we visit. It is a boat with a pull string and makes quite the racket when you pull it.
Who remembers the show Fraggle Rock. My moms says I cried every time it went off. I guess I was a little crazy about the show :)
CindyB
10-14-2011, 02:20 PM
Ok...my DD played with Tamagotchis (now I feel old!!! LOL) I do remember Furbies...never had one but thought they were cute :)
I had ALL the Little People stuff when I was a kid...The castle and tree house were my fav's...I still have pieces of the set, but so wish I had taken better care of it!
I LOVED Fraggle Rock!!! My fav was Marjorie Trash Heap! and loved the Dozers!!! I watched it back when it was only on HBO...
Speaking of toys...anyone remember Weeble Wobbles? Weebles Wobble but they don't fall down!!! Hahaha...had a bazillion of those too :)
illinimom
10-14-2011, 02:55 PM
I do...I remember Weebles Wobble but they don't fall down. Guess I don't pay attention, but I thought Pokemon collecting was still 'in'! I don't know if they were the 'original' Little People, but I had sets for my kids.
Does anyone remember Little Kiddles? The one I remember in particular is Calamity Jiddle.
Sagediva2
10-14-2011, 06:09 PM
I think they still make a version of the Weeble Wobbles. Don't think I had any when I was little though.
Never heard of the Little Kiddles.
Was looking through old pictures today for a kit coming up soon and found a picture of me and my Teddy Rupkin. I also had his friend Grubby. Anyone else had either of them :)
photogirl
10-14-2011, 06:26 PM
My little brother loved Teddy Rukspin, he wanted grubby so bad, but my dad wouldn't let him get it. He already had some issues with his son playing with the talking bear. I remember the first little people and the tomogatchi's, like Cindy my kids played with those when they were little. I loved fraggle rock.
Does anybody remember watching Jem?
lwentkie
10-14-2011, 07:22 PM
Jamie - I had to look up Jem and I remember having the doll!
One of my favorite toys growing up was a Miss Piggy puppet and she wore a silky purple dress! I need to go through some old photos and see I have a pic of it.

Wow, You all have been chatty! I had to take notes. LOL
Yay Chris! Someone remembers Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. That was the best show! I loved Shaun Cassidy.
I loved Adam Ant when he was solo. The only song I remember from Adam and the Ants is Ant Music.
I still have my Cabbage Patch Kid from way back when.
Rollerskating with metal wheels was awful! You could feel every bump!! But at the time we absolutely loved them and would skate for hours.
The Little People toys of the 70's were my favorite! I had the Castle and I loved the secret passage. I had the Holiday Inn, which I can't find references to anywhere...(I've looked them all up just for fun) McDonalds, The Treehouse...I loved them all. So much fun.
I loved Fraggle Rock! Especially the Dozers. They were so cute!
I totally remember Weebles. I don't remember if I have any though.
I never had a Teddy Ruxpin but I remember them.
I watched Jem like once i think...But I hear she's Truly Outrageous. ;-)
Does anyone remember that show, I think it ran all during the 80's, You Can't Do That On Television? It was hysterical. I loved it as a kid.
CindyB
10-14-2011, 08:50 PM
Yes! I loved You can't do that on television! I remember watching that show :)
Speaking of Cabbage Patch dolls...remember their pets the Koosas? I had one if those too :)

10-14-2011, 09:42 PM
I don't remeber the cabage patch pets or that show. But I remember the micro machine cars, and loved to play them with my brothers.
lwentkie
10-14-2011, 10:06 PM
I remember the micro machines, but don't know if my brother had any. I remember my mom got the inside scoop that JCPenney was getting a shipment of Cabbage Patch Kids and we were each able to get one. I do believe my parents still have them at their house. I was a big Barbie fan and Barbie and the Rockers were one of my favorite sets!
Sagediva2
10-15-2011, 03:07 PM
Oh I loved Jem. I had th doll and I'm pretty sure there was a movie.
I rmember that show Jo very funny.

My borther was older so I don't remember the micro machine cars that well or the Cabbage Patch Pets.
I did have loads of Pound Puppies and Pound Kitties though. Remember those?
photogirl
10-15-2011, 04:05 PM
I loved the pound puppies, my grandma was really good at making them. I had 4 cabage patch dolls, and I also was a huge barbie fan. my favorite babie was this one.

10-15-2011, 10:19 PM
I don't have the barbie anymore, I saved them in my parents attic and some bugs or mice got into them and ruined them.
I do remember the stirup pants and the bright colors, what about the decorative shirt slides. They came in tons of diffent shapes. I think I had 20 of them, and 5 or 6 pairs of jelly shoes.
lwentkie
10-15-2011, 10:52 PM

How about Rainbow Brite? I had the doll and her unicorn, don't remember the unicorn's name. She had the cutest little friends. I forget what they are called to but I had some stuffed animals of them. Off to Google to find out about them :)
Sagediva2
10-16-2011, 01:09 PM

Yeah I loved how Strawberry Shortcakes things smelled. She tried to make a come back, Don't think it went over real well.
I didn't recognze the name Chessie cat but the pictures looks very familar.
I think it is so funny how they are trying to redo some of the older things. Like how they made a movie out of the Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and then some classic movies are trying to make a come back....Dirty Dancing, Footloose. Can't we think of new ideas.
Speaking of the Smurfs who was your favorite Smurf? I alway loved Smurfette. I have Smurf sheets and we actually use the flat sheet for DD pack-n-play when we go visit my parents.
lwentkie
10-17-2011, 08:59 PM

*whispers* I kinda had a crush on Hefty smurf. He's the one with the tattoo. Hear me out. There was one show when Hefty and Handy were trying to get Smurfette's attention and they both sang songs. I liked Hefty's song. The end.
I had TONS of Jelly bracelets. And I loved neon clothes. Yellow and Pink were my favorites. Really anything but the orange. I loved my pink and mint green pastel skirts (two different skirts). Jelly shoes!! Oh those were awful!! But I loved them. They hurt sooo bad. Totally pegged my jeans. I never liked stirup pants and used to cut off the stirrups. I don't know why, they just felt weird. I guess I wanted leggings instead. I was just ahead of my time. LOL I wore long sweaters with belts and this kind of knit material crinkly skirt. They were tight around the legs and kind of hung down from your knees loose. Ok I just made it sound ugly. it's really hard to explain. They were really cool at the time. I was in 9th grade at the time. My favorite magazine was Star Hits with all the "New Wave" bands does anyone remember that?
lwentkie
10-18-2011, 12:27 PM

I had been successful in blocking the memories of stirrup pants all these years and now you girls have brought them back in my brain - aaaggghhhh!!! Jem is back on TV now - my kids hate it. Jo - you will be happy to know that Hefty was my favorite also. I liked guys with muscular arms (don't judge me!!). Before MTV, we had a show called MV60 in the Chicago area. They played all the British invasion and "new wave" stuff. That's where I first heard REM before they were known, The Cure, Stranglers, Icicle Works, Adam Ant, etc. I looked up Adam Ant the other day and he's still cute :)

What about Punky Brewster?
grrfluudy
10-18-2011, 06:40 PM
Loved Sweet Valley High. I thought we were talking about pegging your jeans by folding them over and rolling them up. That is all I meant. Loved Punky Brewster. "Wow Power". LOL. Chris, I loved all that music, too. I loved new wave. I still do...ooh I'll have to look up Adam Ant too. I loved him. In fact I have a lot of his songs on my ipod. But I always thought he was cute too. I watched Alf. I really liked him. Had a tshirt lol.
I also loved the Christoper Pike books he is a YA horror writer. His books are creepy. Did anyone read those? They weren't as popular as SVH or anything but I read them around the same time. Does anyone remember the cartoon Dungeons and Dragons? I loved that one. What about Goldie Gold and Action Jack, or Captain Caveman?
Sagediva2
10-19-2011, 01:24 PM

Anyone remember the Goosebumps books? Or the show on Nickelodeon "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"?
grrfluudy
10-19-2011, 02:25 PM
I watched "Are You Afraid of The Dark" a couple of times. I was too old for Goosebumps books.
Anyone remember The Mighty Men and Monster Maker? It was the coolest thing EVER!! Or Fashion Plates? What about Darci? She was like Barbi but too big to fit in her clothes. She was cool though. Anyone remember FIZZIES? (I think that's what they were called) They were yummy drink mixes that came in tablets that fizzed in your water(like alka selzer but it tasted good and wasnt medicine) and turned into a drink. Awesome!

Jo - I loved fashion plates!
Kristin - I was a huge Madonna fan and I liked that movie!
Anyone remember candy cigarettes..loved them even though I wouldn't try a real one!

I loved watching alf. Played with my fashion plates everyday, and bought candy cigarettes eveytime I went to the gass station. We had all of the Box Car children books, and I was big into the Baby Sitter's club books.
We have the 80's scene it game, and had it out the other night. That was fun to play. My husband still has a couple of series of garbage pall kids that are in perfect condition, he swears they are going to be worth something one of these days.

LOL! You all have moved on....I remember most of the things you are mentioning....Box Car Kid, Sweet Valley High, Goosebumps which are sitting on my bookshelf right over THERE!
But they were not mine....they belonged to my kids!
I DO remember Fizzies; at least I think that is what they were called. But those were from the 50's/60s if they are what I am thinking of.....soda pop tabs.

Oh Lori my cousin and I thought we were so cool with our candy cigarettes. Never have and will never try the real thing.
Oh I remember fashion plates. So fun.
Who remembers Tiffany and Debbie Gibson? I remember Tiffany but wasn't a big fan like I was with Debbie Gibson. I might still have her cassette tapes at my parents.

Oh..I really like Tiffany..Debbie Gibson was cool too! How about those big hair bands - Winger, Poison, Warrant, etc!! I loved Kip Winger!

Oh the big hair bands of the 80's are still the best. I loved Nielsen? The hot blonde twins. Pop Rocks were cool and nobody thought they were drugs. My favorite thing though was penny candy. I loved riding my bike downtown and buying as much as I could.

Oh my brother was huge into Poison and Gun N Roses. I loved the hairband look the lead singers had.
Speaking of singers who remember MC Hammer and his pants LOL.

I'm getting on this fun bandwagon!! You have all got some great memories, and I remember most of it, or have heard of it. lol Guess I grew up in the middle of all of this--70s and 80s were the best! The clothes and the hair...and the hairspray. LOL Life was great!
I loved Pop Rocks. We used to get them at the pool during lifeguard breaks and see if we could put the whole bag in our mouth at once and keep from spilling! Sometimes we would just put one on the end of our tongue and see how high it would pop! Too funny! Dungeons and Dragons was a big thing when I was in college (way back when!) but I really didn't get into it.
Anyone remember the tv shows ZOOM! and Captain Kangaroo (with Mr. Green Jeans and his pranking moose with the pingpong balls)? The Captain never saw it coming. (I think that show is where my brother got a lot of his prank ideas from--and he didn't forget all these years either!) LOL

Oh Lori I had forgotten all about him. Don't know how I could though LOL.
I don't remember Captain Kangaroo but my brother watched it a lot I know because it's come up in conversations. He also loved the show Grestest American Hero or something like that. He begged my parents to name me Ralph. Good thing they didn't go with his suggestion.

Oh my I had forgot all about Bozo. He was kinda creepy looking for being a kid's game host.
I don't remember that show.
Has anyone seen that they are trying to bring back some of the older toys. Sock Monkeys, Pull Telephone that eyes move, etc The things I have seen have been in the retro packaging.

Oooh I loved Debbie Gibson. I even dressed like her. hehehe. And it's funny, I haven't heard her in a long time. One of my favorite songs was 'Shake Your Love' and that was on in a um *ahem* establishment (gotta keep it family friendly lol) I was in this weekend. I was dancing to it like Debbie Gibson did (or so I thought.) I may have been a bit impaired (for absolutely no reason I can think of.) The place didn't seem to have a dance floor, my bad. Thank goodness my friend has a phone with the capability to record videos! What did we do with out such WONDERFUL technology. Now myself and ESPECIALLY others can watch it again and again...darn it, where is that sarcasm font when I need it? ;-)

Barnaby Jones was one of the PI shows, possibly before Magnum PI and Matlock. It starred Buddy Ebsen (Pa in Beverly Hillbillies).

I used to watch Barney Miller, but not Barnaby Jones. We watched Columbo though. Love Peter Falk. I never watched Save By The Bell, but my friend bought me some beauty products from the dollar store where he worked in the late nineties. Shampoo, bodywash, conditioner etc. From Saved By The Bell. The scent was called Zachberry. LOL
I remember DeBarge. They had a song I LOVED. I can't remember it though. It was slow, i think.
I also remember Tom Sellack on Magnum PI I never watched it though, but my teacher had a huge poster in her office. LOL
Does anyone remember Choose Your Own Adventure Books? I think they still have them but they came out in the 70's and I used to rush to the bookstore like every week to see if there was a new one. Fortunately my parents were friends with the owner so it didn't bother him too much. What about Disk Movies? Not Laser Disk. They were like records and they came in this cartridge and you had to put the cartridge in the machine to put the disk in. Then you had to turn them over the same way! They had a special machine, of course. It was in the early 80's and they only lasted about 4 years before they were obsolete.

I loved the choose your own Adventure books. If they came out in the 70s they stayed around for a while because I wouldn't be reading them until late 80s.
I don't remember Disk Movies but I'm thinking it is because they "gone" before I was old enough.
Who remembers the bubble gum that was in strings. I can't remember the name but it has baseball characters on the package. You could use as little or as much as you wanted.

Was that the Big League Chew? I totally remember that!
Does anyone remember Hair Mousse that *supposedly* turned your hair different colors, or highlighted them? It was in the early 80's and they were just temporary not the permanent hair color foam we have today. The colors were called Strawberry Mousse, Vanilla Mousse and Chocolate Mousse. LOL
What about in the mid 80's when it was cool to use Sun-In on just the front of your hair?

OMG I totally remember Sun-In! I did my whole head though! Yikes!!! It always turned my hair a funky sorta orange color though LOL.

OMG I totally remember Sun-In! I did my whole head though! Yikes!!! It always turned my hair a funky sorta orange color though LOL.
It did mine, too! We put it in the front because we were trying to look all "new wave" but it was the early 80's. I had a boyfriend that did that that everyone thought totally looked like John Taylor from Duran Duran. John Taylor was my favorite. hehehe

10-27-2011, 03:03 PM
Yeah that was it Jo.
LOL I remember Sun-In. It never turned my hair orange a really pretty golden color. Guess I got lucky. I don't think I did just the front or my whole head. I think I did more or a streak look to make it look like highlights.
I'm too young for the color mousse.
Who remembers when your bubble bath use to come in cool cartoon characters? I remember having Kermit and Miss Piggy. The head of them would come off to get to the twist top. I'm pretty sure I remember a Barbie one too. The head of the Barbie had Barbie hair and everything.

I remember ALL of these! Every single one of them.
I sat in the rafters with my DDs so they could see NKOTB. We owned a VCR with a corded remote. I still have some 45 adapters, although the 78s that my dad used to have have been lost somewhere. My dad delivered milk in bottles. I had roller skates with metal wheels that went on my shoes, and adjusted with a key to hold them in place. One size fits all! My DS still watches Fraggle Rock. We had to take away his Micro Machines after his strokes because he kept putting them in his mouth. We have some of the original Strawberry Shortcake dolls in a box in the basement, along with some Fashion Plates, Smurfs and a Care Bear or two. The Cabbage Patch Kids are in the garage.
DD#1's initials are A.L.F. When she was in second grade I labelled all her school supplies with her initials and have never heard the end of it. I watched Captain Kangaroo at my grandmother's - she had a TV and we didn't. I LOVED Mr Moose and his ping pong balls. Canada had a similar TV icon called the Friendly Giant who lived in a castle and played the recorder. He had a pet rooster named Rusty and a neighbour Jerome, who was a giraffe. He opened his show by arranging dollhouse sized chairs - a straight-backed one, a rocking chair and a big arm chair "for two to curl up in" into a semicircle. Then there was Mr Dressup, who was sort of like Mr Rogers.
My first pair of bell bottoms were navy blue with tiny flowers all over them. I didn't wear stirrup pants because I was too chunky and would have looked like an ice cream cone. Banana clips were staples for my DDs but my hair was always too short. Jelly shoes always made their feet SO dirty! And smelly. :th_sur: I must have gone through a hundred bottles of Sun-In, trying to look like those girls in the magazines, but all it did to my medium brown hair was make it orange.
My DH is distantly related to Madonna and Celine Dion. He liked the hair bands but I never developed a taste for them. I'm more of a Peter, Paul and Mary fan. My kids liked Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now was originally done by Tommy James and the Shondells - and Debbie Gibson. They also liked IceIceBaby. Robert Van Winkle has a reality home reno show on HGTV and the DIY Network now.
Okay, who remembers Gumby and Pokey?
Sagediva2
10-27-2011, 08:43 PM
I remember Gumby. The little green clay guy. If I'm remembering right Pokey is a brown and white puppy...right? Don't remember if there was a show I just know of the puppy Pokey from books.
Who couldn't forget Mr. Rogers. Now that was a good show.
Who remembers Casper the ghost the cartoon?
lwentkie
10-27-2011, 10:24 PM
Oh..we did watch Mr. Rogers a lot! I'm not sure if we watched Casper though. My parents always loved country music and I was a big Dolly Parton fan. Does anyone remember watching her tv show. I always cried at the end when she would sing I'll Always Love You as I thought she wasn't coming back again.

I loved Caspar the Friendly Ghost when I was little. And I also remember Tommy James and the Shondells. I remember using Sun-In way back in the 60's...while wishing we all could be California girls!

PS...Jo...John Taylor was my fav too... I *heart* Duran Duran!!!
The biggest fashion craze of my childhood (the earliest I can remember caring about it anyways)...was Jordache Jeans and clogs (the blue ones with the laces)...anyone remember those? My Mom would never spend the money on the jeans and she thought I would hurt myself walking in the clogs...LOL

Jon was my favorite too. I always went for the tall skinny ones! Pokey was Gumby's horse. There was a Little Golden Book called the Pokey Little Puppy which is what you're probably thinking of Kristen.
I was just singing the Casper song to my kids the other day! And Ice Ice Baby came on the radio and my daughter was astonished that I knew the words... to a RAP SONG!!! I told her this was 80's rap and that the guy had a show on the DIY network now and she laughed at me. Go figure!

I loved Gumby and Pokey!! "He was once a little green ball of clay but you should see what Gumby can do today...he can walk into any book with his pony pal Pokey, too. If you have a heart then Gumby's a part of you." <3
Vanilla Ice had a show on the DIY channel and I missed it? I think he's really cute now without the 80's hair and stuff.
Does anyone remember when Legos were just block sets, before they had diagrams of what you were supposed to make? They still had ones where you could make cars, but other than that it was pretty much just blocks and you had to use your own imagination.

10-31-2011, 10:35 AM
Yeah I remember Legos before all the sets.
I had no idea Vanilla Ice had a TV show. How strange?
When I was little I hate jeans, well pants in general unless they had an elastic band. I do remember when Jordache Jeans though.
Who remembers when it was cool to where overalls and only have one strap buckled?

10-31-2011, 05:46 PM
Hahahaha I totally forgot about the overalls with one strap buckled. That was so cool!
Does anyone remember, this was in the early 80's, when it was cool for girls to wear suspenders? OH and fishing hats! (without the lures. lol) Well, they looked like fishing hats, they probably weren't.
Sagediva2
11-01-2011, 10:45 AM
Don't remember the fishing hats but I do remember girls wearing suspenders. They came in a wide range of colors. I think I was too young to wear them but I definately remember it.
This 80s trend is coming back. Wearing the off the shoulder tops. Anyone remember those in the 80s?
grrfluudy
11-01-2011, 05:21 PM
Yeah I remember the off the shoulder tops. And it's true you look around in the stores and all the clothes are so 80's! I wonder if the teenagers know that or they think it's new?
Does anyone remember when you had to use flash cubes on your camera? Oh, I had another one and I can't remember it. I may be back.

I remember those disk cameras but I didn't have one.
I loved Polaroids. I always thought they were cool. The camera even looked cool. We had a Polaroid camera when I was little. The film was really expensive though. I don't think they make them anymore. Definitely not archival safe. (it's the paper scrapper in me coming out, I can't help it! lol)
Anyone remember when Columbia House used to have a record (real vinyl) club? you got so many for free or a penny? then you had to buy one or something. It was awesome!!
What about K-tel? They had those records that if you stay up late to watch movies on tv the ads would come on. They had these crazy mix records. They were really cool. I wish I still had some...oh wait. Then I would need a turntable. :/

No one?
Ok. Does anyone remember Moon Boots? They were these puffy boots from the 80's, I guess they were called that because you looked like an astronaut if you wore them?
I don't know if anyone has mentioned them, but what about those hypercolor shirts? where you could put your hand on them and they would change like from purple to pink. Those were very interesting.
Mood lipstick? it started out green, blue, yellow, or orange but changed color when you put it on. Mine always turned out red no matter what the color. It was supposed to turn out the perfect lip color for you. I loved that stuff and it stayed on forever.
