Tell us about you...
I'm Liz Israel from Manila, Philippines. I'm 30 years old and a SAHM to Basti, my 2-year old son. I used to work for a US-based computer company as a technical support representative and a US-based credit card company as a customer service representative. I love to travel (if I have the means and time) and I love to dine out with friends and family. I am a coffee lover and a Starbucks junkie. Any drink that comes from Starbucks will definitely make my day but my favorite would be a quad venti hazelnut soy latte that I take either hot or cold. In my free time, I love to watch movies on TV or just read a good book or sleep. I am also into photography and I love to collect CDs of my favorite singers and songs and DVDs of movies and concerts. When I go out with my friends, we usually do karaoke singing (well they say I have a very good singing voice). I actually love to sing and the whole family is musically-inclined one way or another. I am currently a Creative Team member for 3Scrapateers and have been with them since July 2005.
How long have you been scrapping?
My digital scrapbooking birthday is April 28, 2005 so I'm barely 9 months into this hobby.
Do you paper scrap, too?
I used to for a year (2003-2004) and I would say that I'm not even at par with the paper scrappers I know because I use just plain stuff and never really bought a lot of those embellishments and papers. I stopped because it was getting to be very expensive for me and then I was introduced to digital and since then, I made the big switch.
Do you do other crafts?
I also cross-stitch but I rarely find the time to do that now.
How does your family feel about your scrapping?
Although my husband doesn't feel strongly about what I'm doing, my father and my sister are still 2 of my biggest fans. They actually encourage me to do more layouts and often get comments and recommendations from them. I also get some raves from my friends.
Tell us about your computer and software.
I assembled my own computer that I bought in early 2005. I personally handpicked the parts that will go into it. I have a 1GB of RAM, 2 hard drives (an 80GB and a 40GB), a CD writer, DVD-ROM, a 15-inch monitor and the other basics. I use Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop Elements 3 alternately for the craft. In my wishlist for my hardware are a 17-inch flat screen LCD monitor, an external hard drive and a DVD writer.
What/who inspires you when you are doing a layout?
Just about anything and anyone can inspire me when doing my layouts. But most of the time, I scrap about my son and my family.
What is your favorite topic to scrap?
I don't really have a favorite topic to scrap. But I normally find things to scrap in the photos that I take of my son and my family.
What colors do you gravitate to?
I normally go for pastels, blues and browns. Fall colors are wonderful too.
What kinds of supplies do you have a lot of in your folders?
I am a kit hoarder so I have lots of it in my folders. Although I have preference over different kinds of papers – patterned, solid, printed, and textured – I just love them.
What style/s have you not tried but would like to?
I still have to learn how to properly use brushes and blend photos with the background. I think they're cool to do but I know that it takes a lot of practice and time tp create a perfect layout with it.
What style/s do you stay away from?
I haven't really decided on that. For now, I enjoy doing a lot of things when it comes to my layouts so I try to experiment and be creative.
What layout in your gallery here is your favorite?
I don't want to be very self-centered but I really liked the self portrait that I made for a circle journal. It took hours before I was able to create that layout because I found it quite difficult to scrap about myself. I pulled it through though and I have to say that this is one of my favorites.
When doing a LO, do open pics then look for a kit to go with them, or open kit first, and find pics to go with it?
It really depends on the situation and whatever supplies I have on hand. Sometimes I can't help but look for a kit to fit the photos that I have or it also happens that I have a kit and rummage through my old files for pictures to scrap with it. I still have to reorganize my files and hopefully this year would be a lot easier for me than last year.
Do you make any of your own supplies?
I have already started creating digital kits/supplies of my own. I have already made 2 mini kits and a paper pack but I haven't used them yet in my own layouts.
If you do, what stores are they sold at?
None yet. But I've given them out as a RAK to some sites and some friends too.
Have you been published yet?
I got published in Ready, Set, Create's December 2005/January 2006 issue for a Christmas card that I made. It was my very first time to be published. I am the January 2006 Digital Discovery in ScrapStreet.com; and another one of my layouts will be published in Ready, Set, Create's February/March 2006 issue.
What are your future goals in digital scrapping?
I would like to create more of my own digital kits in the future and hopefully be able to open the opportunities and doors for future digital scrappers here in the Philippines by teaching the craft and helping out those who want to start with this wonderful art and hobby.
What is one piece of advice that you would like give to anyone who is just starting out in digital scrapbooking?
There are a lot of things I can say but if there's really just one thing it would be to express your heart and yourself in every single layout that you do. There's no right or wrong thing in a layout. No matter how you did the layout or no matter how simple it is, what matters is that you scrap from your innermost thoughts and feelings. A layout from the heart is always and will always be an excellent layout!
