Gracious, as much book reading as goes on at our house, I'm surprised I don't have many pics of us reading books.

My husband just emailed me this:

A study conducted by Jerrod Jenkins (www.JenkinsGroup.com) found that 58 percent of the U.S. population never read a book after high school. Forty-two percent of college graduates never read another book post-graduation. An astounding 80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year. Of all books purchased, 57 percent of new books are not read to completion and aren't even read past page 18. Finally, only 32 percent of the U.S. population has ever been in a book store. I think it was Benjamin Disraeli who wrote, "When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left, I buy food and clothes."

Isn't that amazing? I was floored.

Those stats are staggering! I am very active at our local library and love to read. Luckily so do my kids. This is pretty sad to hear. I guess most people spend a lot of time in front of the TV these days instead of reading.

i agree - those stats ARE staggering!! I'm not an avid reader by any means but I have bought books and actually read books since school! Wow, it's hard to imagine not ever reading a book after school -- just mind-boggling!

Jeez, that's just awful! I probably read a book a month.. although I go through cycles where I read 1 a week then I skip a couple months.

So are these households that don't even read to their kids? Or, does it just mean a novel? I read at least one kid book a day, often more.

I think I have a couple traditional layouts of Cameron with books...
I will try and upload them....
I have a couple of photos to be added to my career scrapbooking album of Cameron Reading his scrapbooks (he loves to tell us the stories in the photos)

I am an avid reader and if it wasn't for the Harry Potter series I don't think my husband would have ever found the enjoyment of reading...

I love to read! I wish I had more time to do it, but I do try to get in 2-3 books per month. Thank you for the tip. I'll give it a try!

I must be in the minority then! I read ALL the time, I've been known to read three books in one day, and must read at least two books a week - I just cannot go to bed without a book in my hands! Only problem is that it means late nights because I find it hard to put them down again even though I re-read a lot, I don't like to borrow from the library because I love to go back to my books a few months or year after reading and read them again.

This reminds me that I need to buy some new bookshelves! Will definately be taking some photos of my book collection and my toddler with his books too to scrap!

I'm a constant reader too. I always have at leat oen book going ( often times 2) and I MUST read befroe I go to sleep each night. But I also take several reading breaks through the day. I'll pop into my room, read 3-5 pages, then get back to the day.

Those stats are just unbelievable, but if I looka t my household...
All the women read...
none of the men do.

Sad, eh?

I love books! Always have! I used to get caught by teachers with my book hidden inside my textbook so i could read in class... And i never stoped reading since! Books define who I am.

I'm not surprised, given the way schools ruin the experience by demanding a report proving that you learned what the teacher wanted you to learn from the books. That's one of the many reasons we unschool! Here's a lo about my daughter: http://www.gottapixel.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/4856/cat/500/ppuser/4656

Books are so important...reading is so important...my youngest son's middle name is after an awesome book character. Life would be boring without books....I have to scrap why he received that name.

I'm such a bibliophile. Always have been. Can't go into a bookstore (new or second-hand) and walk out empty-handed.

Reading is one of the favorite activities in our home! We are usually reading a book together as a family and the kids all read for at least half an hour every night. I'm so glad they enjoy it, as there is just SO MUCH FUN in a good book!

I would just die if I didn't have books to read..it's one of my favourite past times. I know my kids love to read partly because I took the time every evening to read to them.

Today is Dr. Seuss birthday! That could inspire a cute page with your kiddies--especially if they have Dr. Seuss hats.

I've also seen a cute christmas photo with children sitting in front of the tree reading the Christmas story out of the bible of The Night Before Christmas.

It is amazing. My husband will be able to retire this year, at age 55. God willing we are healthy, we will be teaching people how to read through our county library.

Families are getting busier everyday and I think reading is often last on the list for many families. Our family starts the day with a book and ends with one in the evening! It's part of our routine with our kids!

This is such a great idea. My DH and I read always. Have 4 DD who love to read and now 3 GKS and the oldest two are reading now. Can't wait to get pics to do layouts with.

In our newspaper this morning, there was a big article in the Home section about how people are decorating with books - buying them by the foot from Denmark (they're in Danish, but it's not like they're going to be read!), and turning them around so that all you see are the beige pages - no distracting bindings! And used books are hot in decor - pick up a few at your local resale shop!
Good grief.

I'll have to try scrapping my daughter reading. At 14, she is starting to give up social time for alone time w/ a book. Eyes peeking out above a book may be all I get to see for a while.

I buy books every week - both fiction and non-fiction. I much prefer to read and watch DVDs than to watch TV. The walls of my bedroom are floor to ceiling bookshelves (my ceiling is 12 feet high, so I have a rail and rolling ladder installed). I can't imagine what my life would be like without books.

Unfortunately, the statistics aren't surprising to me. Most of my extended family and friends are part of the statistics. It's sad really, but most of them aren't shown examples by their parents, and perceive books as being academic and uncool.

They just miss so much...
