Debbie with a Y
I was born Debora (no h) Lynn (2 n's, no e) Behm (pronounced beam as in sunbeam). Mom thought the h in Deborah was useless because it is silent and so I went though my childhood and young adulthood as Deb- or- a (accent on the or) Bem. But no matter how you spell it, Deborah, Debora, or Debra, they all come with the nickname Debbie. That's easy, right? NOT! Problem is I was born in the Debbie Reynolds era! Lots of Debbies. In about 4th grade I was in a class with 2 other Debbies. What to do? Add our middle names maybe? Well guess what, we were all middle named Lynn! The funny thing was we all spelled our names differently. There was me, Debora Lynn, another was Debra Lyn, and the other one was Deborah Lynne. Now what are the odds of that! So, to make a long story short, I started spelling my name with a Y and didn't have trouble getting other Debbie's papers anymore. That solved the problem of my first name and when I was thirty I was finally able to get rid of that pesty last name when I married my dear husband Mark Petteruto. Petteruto, what was I thinking! Oh well, at least I know a solicitor as soon as they say "Is this Mrs. Pet (umm) artuto?" !!
