One of the group of paid full time “thief takers” who were the ancestors of the modern policemen. The group was formed by the English novelist and playwright Henry Fielding after he became magistrate at London’s Bow Street Court in 1748. A runners job was to detect and arrest criminals, and to protect travellers from highwaymen and footpads.
