The Yorktown began life as Bon Homme Richard on Dec. 1, 1941 & was commissioned on Apr. 15, 1943. She was renamed to honor the aircraft carrier that was lost at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942. The Yorktown was decommissioned in 1970 and in 1975 was towed to Bayonne, NC, before being permantently moored in Charleston Harbor, SC.
